What is the operating margin? Formula, ranges and example
What is the operating margin?
Operating margin measures operating profit relative to revenue and helps explain the profitability of operations. Divide operating profit by revenue for the same period and multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage.
Formula
Operating margin (%) = operating profit ÷ revenue × 100
- Use income-statement figures for the same period, accounting standard and consolidation scope.
- The canonical revenue key is net_sales. It can represent filed revenue rather than a line literally labeled sales.
- Missing inputs or zero revenue make the ratio unavailable, not zero.
- The API returns operating_margin as a fraction: 0.1 = 10%.
- The sign interpretations below apply when revenue is positive.
Ranges and interpretation
| Range | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| <0% | An operating loss when revenue is positive. |
| 0% | Operating break-even when revenue is positive, not net-profit or cash-flow break-even. |
| >0% | Operating profit when revenue is positive, not a universal healthy threshold. |
Worked example from a filing
Year ended March 31, 2026 (–)
IFRS · Consolidated · JPY
| Input | JPY million |
|---|---|
| Operating profit | 3,766,216 |
| Revenue | 50,684,952 |
3,766,216 ÷ 50,684,952 × 100 = 7.4%
For the year ended March 31, 2026, Toyota earned about ¥7.4 of operating profit per ¥100 of revenue. Both inputs are consolidated IFRS annual figures from the same filing. This is not the share of revenue remaining as net profit or cash on hand.

What to watch
- Sector, cost structure and accounting classifications affect comparisons.
- Operating profit is neither net profit nor cash flow.
- Do not substitute ordinary profit or company-defined business or adjusted profit for a missing operating-profit line.
- Financial-sector reporting formats can lack the inputs for this metric.
- The national ranking uses latest annual figures with a 60% operating-margin cap to filter outliers, not a health benchmark.
